Isidor Feinstein Stone, a famous American journalist once said: "Every government is run by liars and nothing they say should be believed" (ihr). Winston Smith lives his life by this ideal and strives to rebel against his neglectful government. 1984 is a dystopian novel written by George Orwell which tells the story of Winston Smith, an outer party member of the totalitarian Ingsoc (English Socialism Party), for whom he censors news and histories: "Who controls the past controls the future: who controls the present controls the past" (Orwell, 227). He feels rebellious towards the government and dreams about the Brotherhood, a rumored organization combating Ingsoc. The novel was written in nineteen forty six and published in nineteen forty nine; it takes place in a futuristic England which is known as 'Air Strip One'. Orwell envisions the future that he feared to be realistic and portrays it in 1984. Through the examination of the sexual content, graphic violence and the role of the totalitarian government the controversial elements of the novel will be made clear.
The sexual content throughout the novel greatly contributed to its banning. Winston Smith describes the sexual acts that he has committed in the past, with his wife and a prostitute. He gives vivid detail on the discomfort of the act. Due to "The Party's" doing, the act of sexual intercourse is seen as a: "Slightly disgusting minor operation, like having an enema" (Orwell, 69). Before Julia reveals herself to Winston (via letter), Winston believes she is a spy working for the Thought police, an agency that captures those who have committed thought crime (an illegal type of thought). Winston despised the thought of her: "He hated her because she was young and pretty and sexless, because he wanted to go to bed with her and would never do so" (Orwell, 8).
