The beginning of "Death by Scrabble" is particularly funny and carries a great deal of meaning to the proceedings of the story. The first line "It's a hot day and I hate my wife," This is a very interesting way to start out a story. The couple is in their early forty's, and the husband feels like his wife is holding him back from exploring the world. "If she wasn't around, I'd be doing something interesting right now." all they do is sit around the house. He has not talked to anyone other than his wife in a week. While sitting at home on a rather hot day in the summer, they decide to play a game of scrabble. They intend this to be an ordinary game. He starts by playing first; he chooses the word "Begin" to start the game. He chews on his letter "U", something he does every time they play Scrabble. She plays "Jinxed", and this is when the words start to happen, she has jinxed the game.
The humorous irony in the each word that is played provides a great insight in what may be coming later. She played "Sweatier" and he begins to sweat a great deal. When it is her turn again she plays "Fan" and then gets up to turn on the AC unit as he plays "Zaps" and the AC unit shocks her. This happens with every word that is played. Once he is in the lead, 155 to 153, the AC unit that shocked his wife before now explodes, because he played the word "explode" he is catching on, every word they play happens.
