Individualism and Immersion in Western Life


            Over the long run of history, the Greek thinkers first introduced the idea of Individualism, and the Western philosophers, navigators, artistscontinued to discover and renovate this idea. Nowadays Individualism has already immersed into the western culture and plays an important role in people's life, while its opposite behavior: collectivism is slowly leaving the stage.
             Humans are able to survive and pass on their civilizations on this planet due to interactions with other living organisms, which is a necessary element that makes life meaningful; however, due to culture habits and different histories backgrounds, people's behavioral styles differentiate geographically. In John Donne's epigraph, "No Man is an Island": "No Man is an island; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of main." Donne expresses the idea that humans can only survive within a community instead of living alone by himself or herself. He compares individual man to an island, which stands alone in the middle of the ocean, and community to a continent, which is a large piece of land that stubbornly holds together. In his epigraph, he not only expresses the importance of community, but also emphasizes that all people are connected together, that one man's death can diminish him. People should consider each other's emotions during interactions as we are a "continent" that is a combination of many small "islands." In the chapter "Living Together VS Going It Alone," Richard .
             Nisbett finds the Asians tend to have similar opinions as John Donne. He expresses, " For Asians feeling good about themselves is likely to be tied to the sense that they are in harmony with the wishes of the groups to which they belong and are meeting the group's expectations." (Pg2 Living Together VS Going It Alone). Richard Nisbett explores the different living styles Westerners and Asians hold through neutral observations of each other through out the article.
