Aboriginal Women in Law Enforcement


            Police officers play a big role in every county by providing safety and helping each society by protecting them from violence. In Canada there are about "69,299 " (2010 Statcan) police officers in total, and they are divided throughout each province. Even though the majority of police officers in Canada are Male "54,280 " (2009 Statcan), there are about "12,805 " (2009 Statcan) female officers. The number of female officers in Canada may seem small but it is increasing according to the following sources: "There were about 8,300 female officers in Canada in 2001, which was an increase of eight percent from the year before. " (2002 CBC), also "In 2004, police services reported almost 9,900 female officers " (2004, Statcan) and "Statistics Canada figures reported that women accounted over 18 percent of all cops in Canada as of May 2008 or 12,200 female officers. " (2008 Statcan). The number of female police officers has been looked at as a "steady increase " (2010 Statcan). With that said even though the number of male police officers is greater than the number of female officers today, in the near future the two numbers will be similar and equal. .
             According to Statistics Canada (2011), there are about "15 percent " of women who are in the federal law enforcement agencies. Also "at least 100 sworn personnel, state agencies trail municipal and country agencies by a wide margin in hiring and promoting women. Specifically, state agencies report 5.9% sworn women law enforcement officers, which is significantly lower than the percentage reported by municipal agencies (14.2%) and country agencies (13.9%) ". (2001, The Status of Women in Policing). Due to low numbers of female officers, "more than half (55.9%) of the large police agencies surveyed reported no women in Top Command positions, and the vast majority (87.9%) reported no women of color in their highest ranks.
