Setting in The Hunger Games

Katniss' home- Katniss's home is very small 'My quarters are larger than our entire house back home' and shabby. They don't have too much furniture, and the furniture they do have is very worn down. The house shows caste system in Panem. It shows that there is a hierarchy even in the districts. When Katniss is in The Capitol, Suzanne Collins uses Katniss's house to contrast the differences between those living in the districts to those living in The Capitol. .
District 12- District 12 is very dull and grey there is a lot of coal dust everywhere. In District 12 there is a black market that people trade stuff at called The Hob, there is a town square where the reapings are held and other important events, there is the richer half occupied by the bakers, mayor etc. There is also a Victors Village for the tributes who win the Hunger Games, though only one house is occupied. District 12 is surrounded by an electric fence that is only electrified 3 hours every evening because The Capitol controls the power supply. 'today the black cinder streets are empty. Shutters on the squat grey houses are closed.' The bleakness the author creates within the setting District 12 reflects the seemingly hopeless feeling of all citizens of District 12. Even the community spirit, survival and resourcefulness The Hob represents and the colourful cakes in the window at the bakery that Prim loves and Katniss describes as being the only beauty in District 12 are dulled within this setting when 12 year old Prim and the baker's son Peeta were "chosen" when the odds should've been in their favour. Even the people that were described as no longer caring dropped their betting slips. .
The woods outside of the fence- The woods is where Katniss hunts for food, fishes and picks berries to either eat or trade. 'I climb the hillsa rock ledge overlooking a valley. A thicket of berry bushes protects it from unwanted eyes.
