The Legacy of John Wayne

Marion Michael Morrison, who later became known as, John Wayne, remains to be one of the most recognized names in the film industry due to his lifetime success as an American actor. Wayne starred in almost 200 movies in his 5 decade long career and was viewed worldwide as the "true American", playing different characters in mostly Westerns and War cinema. John Wayne was nominated for 41 Awards; winning 25 including 3 Golden Globes and 1 Oscar for his performance in his 1970 film "True Grit". It goes without a doubt; John Wayne remains one of Hollywood's American icons for his contributions to cinematic history.
John Wayne was born as Marion Michael Morrison in Winterset, Iowa in 1907. Early in his life, because of his father's lung condition, he and his family moved to Glendale, California where he would become to be known as the Duke. It is known that he had a pet dog, an Airedale, named Duke. Local firefighters began calling him Duke and the nickname stuck. Before John Wayne was known as John Wayne, he was denied into the Naval Academy, but was athletic enough to land a spot on the football team at University of Southern California as a defensive tackle and had what looked like a promising career. After a bodysurfing accident and not being able to play football any longer, is where he got his first opportunity in the film industry as a prop man in exchange for football tickets. This history proves that he was self-reliant displaying work as an over achiever and was self-made.
If there were one thing that is most recognizable about John Wayne, it would have to be his distinct able low-pitched, almost hesitant sounding in tone, voice. It is John Wayne himself who said, " Talk low, talk slow, and don't talk too much," and that's just what he did. Ironically, during the beginning of his career as an actor, sound on film had just been discovered.
