How Legalizing Marijuana Will Impact Society

            The legalization of marijuana has been a topic of debate for many years now. However, with the legalization of marijuana for both recreational and medical use in Colorado other states are sure to follow in their foot steps. Recently Washington DC has decriminalized the possession of up to an ounce of marijuana. Previously the penalty for such an offense would be up to six months in jail and/or a $1500 dollar fine. Not to mention a criminal record which could cause a social stigma. Now, the penalty has been reduced to a mere $25 dollar civil fine which is the equivalent of a parking ticket. Washington is not the only state to lessen the punishment for carrying marijuana but, 16 other states have also decriminalized the substance. With these changes slowly occurring state by state it is only a matter of time before the country as a whole legalizes marijuana. The problem is that as the momentum for pro marijuana supporters begin to pick up, many non smokers and non supporters of marijuana are becoming uneasy not knowing or not liking the affects they believe legalizing the substance will have. However, if states continue to decriminalize marijuana more research will be conducted on if and how this substance affects society and the economy in a positive way. If this occurs many non marijuana supporters will surely change their minds about the drugs legalization. If marijuana was legal then more people would indulge in it. The research participants that I used consisted of a group of 30 random non marijuana users. Each participate claimed that they do not smoke marijuana, although some of them have stated that they have tried the drug once or twice before in the past. The surveys were distributed to 15 men and 15 women between the ages of 18- 65 and many different ethnic backgrounds. Out of the 30 participants only 10 would disclose their political affiliation. 7 democrats and 3 republicans took the survey the rest are unknown.
