I.57-58).
All of Katherina's life, she is put second to everyone. Everyone she interacts with is scared off because of her temper and disobedience to her father. Lucentio and Gremio even speak poorly of Katherina. This makes Kate shield herself from being hurt by reacting violently even though none of the men in the room seem to care. As the men continue to speak of Kate, she gets irritated and begins shouting aggressive comments to Hortensio: "I' faith, sir, you shall never need to fear. I wis it is not halfway to her heart. But if it were, doubt not her care should be. To comb your noddle with a three-legged stool. And paint your face and use you like a fool." (I.I.61-65) .
While all of this is happening, Bianca is just keeping quietly to herself. Only when Baptista tells Bianca to go inside the house does she react by playing the "perfect daughter" to Baptista. Her attitude is so feigned that Kate yells that she is a spoiled brat to her retreating back. You can tell Kate is jealous that Bianca is being excused from the situation so easily while she is being told by her father that she must stay outside with the men who obviously do not want her there but want her sister, Bianca. "Why, and I trust I may go too, may I not? What, shall I be appointed hours as though, belike, I knew not what to take and what to leave, ha?" (I.I.105-107) The greatest example of sibling rivalry in The Taming of the Shrew occurs in Act 2. .
"In this meeting with Bianca, isolated Katherine reaches out for a meaningful, genuine conversation with her sister, addressing Bianca in all seriousness and beseeching her to speak from her heart and to stop her shrewish game playing" (Brown 168). .
Kate and Bianca both enter the scene with Kate having tied Bianca up. Kate demands that Bianca tell her which suitor she really pines for. While Bianca denies that she has chosen one, Kate insists she's a lying brat.
