She is never interested in play with other children, she prefers to be alone when she plays. From watching her at home and in a daycare setting. Donna seems to be avoidant of her mother. However has a very strong attachment to her daycare provider. .
For my assessment of Donna Williams I used the Developmental Checklist to get the basics on how Donna functions. I wanted to get as much information about her so I can help her in the best way possible, as well as possibly her mother. Donna struggles with everyday tasks that a normal child her age would be able to accomplish. Although Donna can walk normally she is unable to understand how to run or kick a ball. Her hand eye coordination is virtually non existent. It seems as though she has some kind of feeling of safety at home with an old stuffed animal, she never lets it go, her mother stated that she even bathed with it, when she decided it was ok to bath. She can not dress her self completely, she can pull up her underwear and pants but cannot put on her socks, or shirts, and needs help putting on slip on shoes. In light of all her difficulties, she seems to respond happily to music. I assume it makes her feel calm, she doesn't understand the words but the instruments are enough for her to get joy out of it. I went to her day care to observe her more with other children, and to ask the daycare provider some questions, to maybe get some clarification of Donna's home life. Her provider stated that Donna has come to daycare a several times with bruises and the provider has previously talked to her parents about them. She told me the mother just brushes it off as though it was an accident. Just as she explained to me. After the third time the daycare provider made a report to Child Protective Services and they had a social worker go out to observe the home environment. Because they found nothing out of the ordinary, they could do nothing. Donna's daycare provider informed me that at daycare she is very uninterested in other children and even toys.
