The Rise and Fall of Turkish Sultan, Selim III.


            This report is about the rise and fall of a Turkish Sultan named Selim III. Selim was born into power and was put to death by an angry revolting power within his own people. Just as Sultan Selim was an amazing modern reformer, he also fell short of his expectations. .
             Selim III was born December 24, 1761, in Constantinople, and died July 29, 1808. Selim's full name was Ghazi Sultan Selim III. Selim was a reform minded Turkish Sultan that ruled during the Ottoman Empire from 1789 to 1807. 1 A Sultan is known as a ruler of a Muslim country. 2 Selim III was the son of Sultan Mustafa III. Mihrisah Sultana was his mother. Mihrisah was born in Georgia and she was involved in reforming the government schools and creating political corporations. 3 Sultan Mustafa III, Selim's father, was well educated and was also a supporter of reform. 4 Mustafa had tried to make a powerful army during his rule because he always feared a Russian invasion. The Ottoman army at the time was called the Janissaries . .
             Mustafa died in 1974 of a heart attack. Mustafa's brother, Abdulhamid became the Sultan after Mustafa died. Selim was young when his father died and his Uncle Abdulhamid took care of him. Selim was 28 years old when Abdulhamid died on April 7, 1789. Selim III succeeded Abdulhamid and became the twenty-eighth Sultan of the Ottoman throne on that same day. 5 When Selim came to power, the Ottoman Empire was already having trouble. The Ottoman Empire was the last Muslim political force. This empire had emerged in the last part of the Middle Ages and was still alive until the early 20th Century. 6 The Ottoman Empire became the modern state of Turkey. .
             Sultan Selim III really liked literature and calligraphy. Many of Selim's works were put on the walls of mosques. He also wrote many poems and was a musician. He spoke Arabic and Persian. He was also religious, patriotic, and played the reed flute and a long necked lute.
