A Cultural Self-Assessment

Also, in the summer my parents and I plant tomato seeds, jalapeño seeds, potatoes. Anything that is good to eat, we plant it. This reminds me back to where I was in Mexico. I used to go with my grandfather Juan to watch his crops grow. I even got to ride in his tractor when going home. I grew up in this small ranch called San Juan Viejo. This ranch is located five minutes away from Acambaro, Guanajuato. Acambaro, is the closest city to the ranch. If we needed to buy groceries we had to ride a bus or asked my grandfather to take my mother and me to buy food and buy our personal things. We mostly used to ride on the bus to go to the city until my father came in December to spent time with us. In this town everyone knows one another. Everyone known who my parents and my grandparents are plus my oldest sister Sucy. To this day they know who my father is and people keep saying to me, "You're Juan Luna's granddaughter, right? " or "You look exactly like your father. " .
I was raised old school therefore I considered myself to be in both high power distance and low distance. High distance because I experienced anxiety in communicating with others. I often use avoidance strategies like answering questions with a simple yes or no, and I sometimes cut people off. Is sometimes hard for me to say no to a friend when they invite me to go out. I tell them yes and later changed my mind because I first need to ask my father permission to go out. Most of the times I prefer not to even ask him since I know he is going to question me on who I am going to out with. Plus he likes to joke around with my friends and he has nicknames for them. For example my friend Wendy became "Viento. " Another thing is that I really don't like talking to others about my life. If something bothers me I keep it to myself and try to show others a strong face just the way my mother had tough me. However, I adapted low power distance living most of my life her.
