Gradually, he found his interest in reading fantasy books and particularly fascinated to Greek and Norse mythology. Due to Adlit.org (2014), he realised that fantasy stories are lot older than people think, "It didn't start on the 1930s or the 1920s - it started two thousand years ago with mythology; and a lot of the themes that we see in fantasy today are very, very ancient." Ever since then, the timeless myths have always been intriguing him. It brought him to recognize that Greek mythology has everything anyone could have asked for from a fantasy story: Romance, Action, Adventure, Tragedy and Mystery. During his middle school years, he got himself involved into writing and he was suggested to submit his stories for publication. However, unfortunately, he sent a few of his writings and they were turned down. However, he did not stop his passion towards writing even after many publishers had rejected him. Soon enough, the first two short stories that he wrote were published in the UTSA literacy magazine. This shows the determined characteristic in him that it is unlike other authors who immediately gave up on publishing their work after got rejected. While he was attending Alamo High School in San Antonio, he used to take part as an editor for the school newspaper and won third place in state for feature writing. (Wheeler, 2013). This shows an unexpected result from a child who has no even a slightly interest in literature and it also shows that Rick Riordan truly has a talent for writing.
After Rick Riordan had gotten into college, he had not taking completely serious in writing and instead, he focused his creative energy on music and played a part as the lead singer in a folk rock band. As he had stopped writing stories and started to write lyrics, it has also shown that he had not stop practicing his creativity in writing. Writing has become a huge and important part of his life.
