Autobiography of a Racialized Body

As I got older and the topic of race and ethnicity was discussed more and more I still didn't understand how this affected my life specifically. .
             It wasn't until college that I really began noticing how race and ethnicity was a huge part of our everyday life. Ohio University's campus is filled with people of different races and ethnicities that differ from what I identify myself to be. It was quite an eye opening experience for myself. I took a previous Cross-Cultural class where we had student from Japan join my class and learn along side us. We learned more about their culture and they learned more about our. I was paired up with a girl who I spent time with getting to know more about her Japanese culture and she got to learn more about my American culture. It was difficult at first with our communication difficulties trying to understand what one another was saying or what we mean by what we said. I could only imagine the culture shock for her. I remember a specific time that when we first met we met for coffee because I thought it would be a perfect casual meeting place to sit and get to know one another a little more in a public atmosphere. We were standing in line to order a coffee and I asked her what she would like to drink and she looked back at me with a confused look on her face. I used hand gestures to indicate I was talking about something to drink and she smiled and nodded her head but I don't think she still understood what I was talking about. After we ordered our drinks and went to pay I told her that it was my treat and she looked very surprised that I offered to buy her a coffee. When we sat down I asked her if this was something that they did over in Japan as a way to hangout with friends and enjoy the company of her friends. She told me going out for coffee wasn't a typical thing she engaged in and I told her it was a big thing we did here to pass the time or just to relax.
