Print and Online Magazines - Essay


            Seventeen Magazine is a monthly girls magazine with a target audience directed to 12 19 year old girls. The first issue of Seventeen Magazine was published in September 1944 and now is one of the most popular magazine for teenage girls selling approximately 2 million copies in every month. It is owned and is published Hearst Corporation but Seventeen was originally published by Triangle Publications. After that, News Corporation bought Triangle in 1988 and sold Seventeen Magazine to K-III Communications and later sold the magazine to Hearst in 2003. Hearst Corporations also produces 300 other magazines worldwide and seventeen magazine has its own international editions for several countries around the world. Recently during the past several years, Seventeen has launched their online version of Seventeen Magazine which is additional to its current print version.
             Digitalization is the process of converting information into a digital format this originally started in 1982. Since then, the demand for print magazines has gone down therefore the sales have decreased as well. This is because now, there is more competition for attention due to the fact that there are online magazines as well, may divert audiences to go online because it is more convenient. The main advantage of online magazines is that it is more convenient for people to go onto an e-magazine. The fact that is it online means that it is easily accessible to anyone anywhere and also can be updated constantly whereas being updated monthly. Another benefit is that there is a wider audience. For magazines looking to make profit by advertisements, this means a larger audience for higher profits. An additional advantage is that there is an unlimited space to publish content. This means they would not have to worry about advertisement space or cutting down on articles to make everything fit on a certain set of pages. .
             The traditional codes and conventions of a print magazine would be things such as the masthead, main coverline, minor coverlines, the celebrity or model image, barcode and celebrity credit.
