Why We Act the Way We Do

That's when they enter the third stage, called Concrete Operational Stage. Now they are aware that 2 pieces of pie is the same as 3 pieces of the same pie. The last stage is called Formal Operational Stage; this stage is a result of the stage before. Children in this phase are 12 years old and are able to answer "if this, then that" questions. As a result of Piaget's theory, we now have a better concept of the cognitive development. He narrowed down the growth of our mental processes. I believe this theory has a lot of truth to it. I remember being around 7 years old and someone asking me "What weighs more, a pound of feathers or a pound of gold?" I quickly said a pound of gold, and then realized they were both a pound, therefore weighed the same. I also remember turning 13 and viewing life in a different way. I believe this was because I was in the Formal Operational stage. I realized that if I didn't lie to my parents, then life would be more gratifying. I don't remember being in the Sensorimotor Stage, but I do have photos that prove this phase. In one photo I have toy Christmas tree in my mouth, and in another photo I'm squeezing my butt into a crib for baby dolls. All this demonstrates Piaget's theory on cognition development. Many psychologists use a modernized version of this theory. .
In the cognitive perspective, the therapy most often used is directive therapy. Directive therapy is a cognitive-behavioral therapy that teaches adolescents how to deal with the world around them, and their emotions, in a way that is more beneficial to them. The point is to get rid of the dysfunctional model he/she was going by, which lead them to their treatment plan. Learning how to deal with their emotions is the cognitive apart of the therapy, and learning how to deal with the world around them is the behavioral part of the therapy. This type of therapy is very beneficial because it focuses on both areas in life; your outer area, which is your environment, and your inner area, which are your emotions.
