Feminism and the Ethics of Care

On page 153 in The Elements of Moral Philosophy by Stuart Rachels, Utilitarianism is mention in comparison to Ethics of Care. In Utilitarianism, one would say a person has a duty to help out those in need in another country, but Ethics of Care would say a person does not have a duty to help out those people in another country due to not having a personal relationship with those who are being cared for. This Ethics of Care is what feminist are trying to fight against. It is saying that you shouldnt care for someone without having a personal relationship with them. Which ties into that woman care way too much about things that have nothing to do with them. Rachels quotes Roy Baumeister saying Women specialize in the narrow sphere of intimate relationships. Men specialize in the larger group (Rachels, 150). This is saying women do better at gossiping about nonsense, while men are able to talk to a bunch of people at once and get things done without having an emotional attachment. It is true that it would be easier and faster to have two men working out an issue, than a man and woman, or two woman trying to work out a problem. This does not mean that two woman cannot come to the same solution, but that some believe going the easier route is way better, than chancing a waste of time.
Bioethics is a new part of feminism that came around about the 1950s and 1960s. Bioethics came around to describe the ethics in the health care system. Feminism can inform us about bioethics which is why it is an important thing to learn about (Pinch, 1 and 2 and 3). Some of the early work done in bioethics was shaped by scholars in philosophy, theology, and medical ethics (Pinch, 3). Feminist has had some major influences on bioethics by examining the foundation of bioethics [and] question[ing] the prevailing paradigms in bioethics (Pinch, 4). A major theme with feminist that has to do with bioethics is the assumptions of traditional philosophical discourse.
