As a single mother of 2, living in a small apartment with a large monthly rent in downtown Houston, having to decide what to do with the 10 extra sandwiches each day is a tough moral decision for Anne. She has all these sandwiches that she can keep to feed her children for a couple days, she can give them to the homeless people of Houston that have no other source of food, or she can do some mix of both of those solutions. All she knows is that she has to get rid of the sandwiches somehow to keep her boss happy. Throwing them in the trash is absolutely not an option, she has hungry children at home, and there are far too many hungry homeless people that could benefit from these leftover sandwiches. She is constantly struggling between whether she should keep the sandwiches to feed her children, or help feed the homeless population of Houston. She turns to the studies of Aristotle, who selfishly believes that people should do good because it makes them feel good, and Mill,who altruistically says that people should do good because it is good for the long term happiness of the world, to help her figure out what the best decision is. Their advice both benefits the homeless people, but the motives behind them and the circumstances put on them are what make Aristotle and Mill's advice drastically different. .
Aristotle, with his more selfish beliefs, would tell Anne that she should give 7 of the sandwiches away to the homeless people around the city, and take 3 home for her and her children. This would not only make Anne and her family happy, but it would also bring happiness to a group of homeless people. Not only would Anne be feeding her family, she would feel better about herself because she is helping other people. While it is great that she is helping starving people on the streets, it is done with selfish intentions because she is only giving the sandwiches away to make herself feel like a better person.
