Civic Citizenship

An engaged citizen concentrates more on being involved within their community rather than standing at a voting poll. An individual has the right to take forth the civic duties that every individual is given. But many people choose different routes and chose to be an engaged citizen. Fewer Americans are engaged in elections; they don't show up to campaigns. I believe many of us lack confidence and think our vote is not going to make a change. So as a result many young citizens prefer to do voluntary work where we see the immediate effects of our actions. The young are described as invisible generation while the old generation is described as the greatest generation as described by Dalton. .
Dalton includes an article from Los Angeles Times to illustrate how engaged citizen is relevant today among young citizens. It was "an interview with a California university student who had spent his semester break as a volunteer helping salvage homes flooded by hurricane Katrina " (Dalton 1). This shows that this college student went out of his way to organize a group of student volunteers to give back to his country. This would help the community be a better place and a cleaner environment. Through these efforts one can clearly see how one can be a good citizen without having to vote. Even though the polling place was only miles away, voting did not even cross his mind he'd rather volunteer because for him it had a more valuable outcome than voting.
Young citizens are becoming engaged citizens over duty-based citizenship because being one requires knowledge and understanding about the government. Something many youths are uninterested in learning. Every citizen needs to know how the government works in order to know how become involved. Thus if one is politically inactive it may be hard for them to find a way to participate in politics. As a result participation has increased in community service and direct demonstrations.
