Miss Granny - Film Review

South Korea is the country which well-known for its entertainment industry, especially in music and filming area. However, besides many films were made in the last decade, only series dramas are the mainstream type. Moreover, those dramas are always about love and romance. There are only few movies (not dramas) that are about family and culture, and the movie "Miss Granny" is one of them. The movie helps me realize how much similar Korea's culture and my Vietnamese's are, and also points out the differences between the two cultures.
Miss Granny is a combination between fantasy genres, comedy. The movie is about a 74-year old widow named Oh Mal-Soon who is living a normal life with her son's family. However, Oh Mal-Soon does not satisfy about it. She feels like she has missed a lot because she spent the entire of her youth raising her son alone. One day, after steps out of the photo studio shop, she miraculously transform back to herself when she was 20 years old. Therefore, she decides to enjoy her youth as long as she can.
There are many differences between Vietnamese's cultures versus Korean's. I will start with the small detail. First of all, the son's name is Ban Hyun-chul which has "Ban" as the last name. The last name is probably from his dead father's last name. However, Oh Mal-Soon still keeps her last name even after she married. At the first time, I thought she may just want to show her independence after the husband died. However, I decided to make a quick research, and found out that a woman does not require changing her last name after married in South Korea. This is different from my country. In Vietnam, women have to change their last name to their husband's after married, and the children's last name are named after their father's. This detail proved that Vietnam still promote patriarchy in the family. However, things have changed a lot in the last few decades when a child's name can contain both father and mother's last name, but the father's last name will always stand first, and will be the only last name.
