I wasn't really sure how I was supposed to interact with these people. Would I even talk to them? When I arrived at 8:30 a.m., I had to squeeze past the already large group of people that were gathered just to get inside. I knew there were homeless people, but I became 100 percent more aware of how many when I arrived at the church. After I got inside the church, the members in charge were very welcoming and let me jump right in to help. The sack lunch program is set up so that two dozen people will receive meals every day at 9 a.m. on a first come first serve basis. Soon after I arrived and we prepared the meals, we opened the doors and let the group come in to line up for their sacks. After we had given out the all twenty-four meals, I was saddened to see that there was still a few people in line who hadn't received meals that day because we ran out. But instead of them turning around and going to look somewhere else, they surprised me by sticking around and just talking with some members of the church. I wasn't quite sure what to say when one older man sat down next to me while I was waiting to catch the bus back. He started the conversation by asking me if I was a member of the church. When I told him that I wasn't, he asked me then how I ended up giving out meals at 9 o clock in the morning? I told him that I was in college and trying to explore my field of study options, and that I am interested in Social Work. I told him that one of the things I learned in my Social Work class is that you have to be willing to put yourself in someone else's shoes before you can help them, and that here was a good place to do it. After a few more minutes of talking, I had to catch the bus. But he said to me before I left, " Young lady, you have something special in your heart that many people don't have, and that is the willingness to help others. Don't ever lose that, because people like you are hard to find these days.
