A Holiday with Barack Obama

            If I had to choose a person to celebrate their birthday as a holiday it would have to be Barack Obama. I chose Barack Obama for several reasons, not only has he done a lot as a politician but he also broke a lot of barriers and made history by becoming the first American president that is partially African-American. His mom is white and his father hails from East Africa.
             Barack Hussein Obama was born on August 4th 1961 in Honolulu, Hawaii. He was a civil-rights lawyer and teacher before pursuing a political career and Obama also worked in Chicago as a community organizer for low-income residents. .
             Living in a country where people like me were treated as less than humans and treated like animals and used as free labor, his achievement puts things in perspective for all people living in America of African descent; and being that just about 60 years ago there were barely any black people in politics. He made me believe that a person that looks like me can become anything I put my mind to in America today. .
             The holiday I would choose to replace is November 27 Thanksgiving Day because I feel like that's an unnecessary holiday to celebrate because of the reason behind the celebration of thanksgiving. The reason behind the celebration of Thanksgiving is celebrating the takeover of a people and their land. Native Americans or Indians were the original inhabitants of the Americas. Their land was taken by force by European settlers, hence the celebration of "Thanksgiving". .
             The tradition of celebrating should stay the same, but I feel as though it should be changed to Barack Obama day to celebrate a more prosperous event for America. An event that proves that if slavery or segregation was still going on America would have been one of the worst countries in the world today. Martin Luther King JR. paved the way for the achievement of a black person to be president possible and Barack Obama made it happen, although it took about 60 years between the two events (the civil rights movement and the election of Obama as president).
