The Dead and the Gone by Susan Beth Pfeffer

            "Some big thing hit the moon night,a planet or a comet or something"(Pfeffer 9). The novel is The Dead and the Gone it was written by Susan Beth Pfeffer. The main character in the novel is Alex. In the novel some big thing hit the moon and knocked it closer to the earth and it causes a lot of problems that everyone has to deal with. The disasters that happened because of the moon getting to the earth are volcanoes, flooding, food is scarce, no electricity, volcanic ash is in the air, and tsunamis. Many people start dying because of all the disasters. The three main problems from the moon that effected the main character are scarce amount of food, no parents, and the electricity goes on and off.
             The first problem Alex had to deal with was that there was a scarce amount of food. The disaster caused many people trouble. No one really had any food. There was food line but people could only get a small amount of food. The effect is important because some nights Alex couldn't eat anything because there wasn't a lot of food and he wanted to conserve the food. "Food deliveries suspended indefinetly"(Pfeffer 71). The line was closed and they had to find another way to get their food. The moon disaster is the main reason that they are running out of food. The scarce amount of food was a major effect on Alex's life. .
             The second problem from the disaster is Mami and Papi both got stranded. Papi went to Puerto Rico for a funeral and never come back and they believe that Mami died. The effect is important because Alex had to learn how to be responsible and take care of Bri and Julie. "He's in Puerto Rico for my grandmothers funeral" (Pfeffer 1). Because of the disaster Alex docent have parents anymore and has to be the parent. Having no parents makes Alex a much more responsible person. .
             The third problem that Alex had to deal with was the electricity would go on and off. The electricity is messed up so at night time they can't really see anything.
