Spiritual Gifts by Marcellus Medina

I chose the work of art by Marcellus Medina who is from Zia Pueblo. The contemporary image is titled Spiritual Gifts which was painted in the year of 2013. The work of art is a 6 foot by 26 foot painted in watercolors and acrylics on a large piece of wall. This image was painted at the UNM Sandoval Regional Medical Center and is at the side entrance for everyone to see as they walk toward the hallways of the center. It gives a sense of comfort as you look at this painting and catches the attention of the eye with all the extravagant colors and designs that are on the image. It gives the viewer more than eye full and the image attracts the attention of wanting to explore every detail.
As a whole, the image tells a story of healing, life, and universal faith portrayed though symbols and images considered sacred in Zia Pueblo. The image is to represent peace, courage, love, faith, hope and enlightenment. The ethereal mural of clouds, butterflies, birds and Indian Angels symbolizes rejuvenation, the vitality of life and connectedness of all things. The image has dark and bright colors. It also has very thin lines outlining the beautiful characters painted and the background image brings it more to life as if the person looking at the image was sitting in the painting.
The very thin straight lines in this painting bring out all the persons to be in real life. The two butterfly females faced toward the center of the person who seems to be mother earth bring out the motion in them. The diagonal thin lines of the mother earth positioned in the middle give her more attention as her arms are upwards making something magical in the palm of her hands. The very lines wrapped around their waist give them a medium build as it creates a medium body frame. The small lines used on the lady in the middle structure her eyes, nose and mouth. The thick bold lines used on the potteries make out the designs which makes out the Zia symbol in the middle and also the thin lines make out the parrots at the top of the pottery.
