People deal with everyday situations very differently than others. Everyone is diverse; we handle things in our own unique way, possibly because of how we were raised or something that has happened in our past. For example, when I was thirteen years old my father passed away therefore I deal with death in my own way, unlike someone who wont lose their father until they may be much older. Death is a very serious topic and one-way people express their feelings regarding it is through poetry. Do not Go Gentle Into that Good Night written by Dylan Thomas, talks about death as if he hates it and doesnt want it to occur. Daddy written by Sylvia Plath, is about her father dying and her madness that follows. Lastly, Death be Not Proud written by John Donne mocks death. Bereavement is dealt very differently throughout these poems by different authors describing the hard times they have gone through in life where death may have been the dominant subject.
My personal favorite was Do not Go Gentle Into that Good Night written by Dylan Thomas. Part of the reason that this specific poem is my favorite is because I can relate to it from a past experience of mine. When I was 13 my father passed away, and only then do I wish I could have read this poem to him. Throughout this poem Dylan is talking to men but specifically his father. He is basically telling him to not die, and stay strong against death. Dylan was not accepting of his father dying, therefore wrote this poem telling him to celebrate life and not to give up so easily. The repetition during the poem is essential because it shows the emphasis and importance of what Dylan Thomas was trying to say. Rage, rage against the dying of the light (Thomas p.859) is a very significant line, we can tell because it repeats it self as well as this is where Dylan is trying to tell his father to stay with him and fight as hard as he could to not let go. This poem shows obvious hatred against death, however the way he talks and describes everything is quite soft and calming.
