Character Summary - Detective Mackey, The Shield

308). The Detective has a softer side and although most times he intimidates others in the officers, certain times he stands up for those who are mistreated for example when there a new detective who came in Detective Kevin Hiatt everyone was making fun of him making jokes that he was fat, but Detective Vic Mackey defended him and since he was well respected the other officers stopped making fun of the new detective (Ryan, 2002). On top of that he takes a lot of time out to encourage others to step up and takes part in bringing new officers out in the streets and showing them around of how the real world is (Ryan, 2002). Even though Detective Vic Mackey feels like he must always be superior to his other crewmembers by always calling the shots, being the first one in to take the risk for his crew, if they do something wrong he would take the blame (Ryan, 2002). He looks out for his young children Matthew Mackey and Cassidy Mackey by always having a officer watch his house day and night, he protects his secret that he gives money to a "exotic dancer" in order for her to give out information of what is going on in the streets (Ryan, 2002).
According to Freud's personality theory (1923/1961 as in Wood, Wood, Wood & Desmarais, 2008 p 308-309) there are five stages of Psychosexual Development (Wood, Wood, Wood & Desmarais, 2008 p318-319). Freud believed that children experience unconscious sexual fixations, as they grow old; however these sexual urges change drastically in each stage (Wood, Wood, Wood & Desmarais, 2008 p.318-319). They include the oral, anal, phallic, latency and genital stages (Wood, Wood, Wood & Desmarais, 2008 p 318-319). Detective Vic Mackey must have been fixated in the anal stage and consequently is anal-retentive: obsessively organized and neat (Wood, Wood, Wood & Desmarais, 2008 p318-319). His office is very neat; the dangerous/ illegal jobs he does on the sides for more money are never traceable as well (Ryan, 2002).
