Personality Analysis - The Royal Tennenbaums


Royal is clearly narcissistic and only concerned for his well-being which is shown by his abrupt return to his spouse and his lie about dying from cancer. All for the sole purpose of receiving the family's pity and take advantage of free living in his former home. .
             Royals Change.
             Royal Tennenbaum appears to go through certain stages faster than the appropriate ages due to a sense of urgency with his life and that he is now in the presence of his family. As time goes by, Royal begins to displays signs of generatively. According to Erik Erikson the later year stages of psychosocial development produce care and wisdom (Schultz & Schultz, 2009). This adaptive way of coping did not seem present prior to his return home as he did not seem as concerned about guiding his own children. Royal begins taking more of an interest with his family and begins to spend time with his overprotected grandsons. The time with his grandsons, although spent with reckless behaviors and activities such as going to dog fights and hitching rides and the back of garbage trucks is the start of Royal's resolution of stagnation and begins leading to a more mature self. Royal, now taking more of an interest in his own family starts showing the basic strength of care is developed from his newly found generatively. .
             This now leads Royal into the maturity stage, developed by ego integrity versus despair. It's easy to see that Royal is regretful of his mistakes and views himself as a bit of a failure for having left his family. He tries to repair the broken relationships by making up for lost time and constantly telling his wife that he loves her, which comes across sincere but also as a way to keep her from her boyfriend's marriage proposal. Being that Royal's lie about dying results in him leaving the family home he finds himself getting a job, Royal had not pursued work since being disbarred when his kids were teenagers.
