The Negatives of Merging Technology with Education

Golton has also found that this is linked to the decrease in students' other social activities such as reading, writing, working, playing, and conversing. While some teachers seem to take little interest if their students pay attention or not, others are offended by the thought that a student would rather play games than have the opportunity to learn new material. At the request of complaining instructors, some classrooms have been outfitted with 'kill-switches' that temporarily disconnect a classroom's data ports from internet access. Although the idea of these 'kill-switches' may provide useful for getting the students to refocus, it also hurts the class as a whole. After a teacher disconnects the room from internet access, it often takes a long time to restart class. It takes away from the class's opportunity to learn since all the computers have to restart and reconnect to the internet. While the students that weren't paying attention in the first place may not care, other students that work hard now have less time to learn. Many teachers constantly have to remind their students to pay attention or look at the board to get them to maintain control of their minds. Teachers have found that an easier way to get their students' attention rather than 'off' switches is to provide a student with a series of rules for internet usage in the classroom. Professor Gallupe of Queen's University uses guidelines such as tops down-laptops closed when they are not needed for classroom activities. Other teachers try to limit the amount of work that can be done through the internet and increase what can be done orally. Rules such as these enhance the collaboration and social interaction that will benefit the student in the future.
Technology that is used throughout the school day proves to become addictive when used often. Students at almost all points throughout the day can be found texting, playing games, or watching videos.
