Many adolescents throughout the world suffer from chronic conditions that influence their day-to-day activities. In some instances those afflicted with these conditions such as asthma become complacent with their health care regimens However, research into the reasons with this non-compliancy was lacking. Kyngãs (1999) initiated a study titled Compliance of Adolescents with Asthma. The purpose of this essay is to critique the above study. To undertake this, the areas of focus include; appropriateness of the abstract, appropriateness of the problem statements, clarity and relevance of statement of significance, appropriateness of the research questions, theoretical framework and comparison and relationships of relevant literature reviews. .
Appropriateness Suitability of the Abstract to the Study.
An abstract should provide the reader with sufficient information to determine whether an article is pertinent to them. The abstract for the study Compliance of Adolescents with Asthma addresses the purpose of the study (to describe the health regimen compliance of adolescents with asthma). It also identifies the study methods (a questionnaire), the independent variables (the associated factors concerned with compliance), the dependent variables (degree of compliance) and the population under study (Finnish 13 - 17 year olds suffering from asthma). The abstract also revealed the results of the study. The only information lacking from the abstract was the implications for nursing practice. As a whole the abstract provides all the necessary information to the reader to allow them to readily review the article and assess whether it is of interest to them. (Kyngãs, 1999, pg 195).
Appropriateness of the Problem Statement Phenomenon and the Purpose of the Research and their Relevance to the study.
The general topic of this quantitative study is Asthma. The scope of this inquiry was narrowed to concentrate on the problem of compliance and the factors, which affect it.
