Narrative Structure - A Farewell to Arms

A Farewell to is a wonderful novel about world war one and the experiences and relations of a man named Henry. A Farewell to Arms has a strong narrative structure consisting of an exposition, rising & falling actions, a climax, and, a resolution. A farewell to Arms does well to adhere to that structure but sometimes it can feel like the story falls and begins to rise onto the rest of the story. .
Exposition is the introduction of what is needed for everything to develop into a story. Here it can be easily seen at the start of the story. Here the reader is introduced to the war, and Henry's role as a part of the ambulance core and his role in the war with the Italians. It also introduces us to the Italians in the war with him. More importantly it introduces the early stages of Henry's and Catherine's relationship. At this point everything that's plays a major role in the development of the story as been shown to us. Broadly, that being Catherine and Henry and the war itself that the Italians require Henry for. Once everyone has been introduced and the reader has a feel for the story, the entire situation takes a turn for the worse in the war, but also reflecting at his relationship. .
Rising action can be seen in the story when Henry meets Catherine. Here it sets up for the development of their relationship, how its could possibly make play a key role in the development of both characters and their relation to the story. How that fits better as a rising action is the realization that Henry is still apart of the war with the Italians. These two key situations mixed together hint that one might have to be chosen over the other. However at this point in the relationship we kind of understand which one Henry with choose, and that is when the story starts to rise. Climax is shown when Henry takes an injury during the battle due to blast that left his knee damaged. This situation brought him to the hospital of which Catherine worked, and where they spent a lot of time together.
