Book Review and Visual Literacy - Piggy Book

A picture book is a book in which pictures and texts are equally balanced and equally important. Words and pictures are dependent on each other to narrate and complete the story. Anthony Browne is the author of the book titled Piggy Book. It is a book that tells us of a family of two young boys (Simon and Patrick), a father (Mr Piggot) and a mother (Mrs Piggot). The males in the story take their lives for granted until there is a disruption that the mother left home. The reason that she decided to leave is that she feels such is the only way to get them (the males) to learn from their greediness and excessive, rapacious desire. The males learn later on that they are utterly reliant on her and beg her to stay when she returns. She agrees, but only on the condition that they help her with the housework and cooking. From some greedy pigs, they turn into people who take on their responsibility and realize their roles, fairness, stereotypes, and ultimately, to respect feminism. In the first half of the book, the images shows the males, the house they live in, and the pig-like personality that resembles them. The images also show Mrs Piggot's hard and gloomy life doing housework and cooking for the males. In the second half of the book, the images show the males who morphed into pigs (there are also other things in the background with the face of a pig- the moon, telephone and the clock). In addition, there are pictures of the males begging Mrs Piggot of her return, the males doing their housework and Mrs Piggot mending the car. All of these pictures reinforce the messages, with the most important ones (messages) being feminism, taking people for granted and modeled behavior.
When we begin to read the book, we learn that the males have superiority and priority. This can be emphasized by the picture on the front cover. From the cover, we see that mum is giving the males a piggyback. This indicates that mum has the burden of stress looking after the family that relies on her.
