The 2013 and 2014 Somerset Winter Storms


            During the winter of 2013/2014 large parts of the Somerset Levels were under water. Whole villages were isolated, while people who could be were evacuated from their homes and farming communities were left in disarray. The objective of this research proposal is to attempt to understand the social impact caused by the winter storms in 2013/14 on a Somerset Community one year on. The reason for this proposal is to identify the impact on individual people, families and businesses both socially and financially who were affected by this disaster. This proposal will provide background but in the main a base line to and methodology for the research plan to commence but will not report back on the actual research results. However the conclusions from the research plan should provide a statement of what perceptions and circumstances have changed one year on from the disaster and if there are there are benefits or other conclusions from the actual research.
             The goal of a research proposal is to present and justify a research idea you have and to present the practical ways in which you think this research should be conducted. The forms and procedures for such research are defined by the field of study, so guidelines for research proposals are generally more exacting and less formal than a project proposal. Research proposals contain extensive literature reviews and must provide persuasive evidence that there is a need for the research study being proposed. In addition to providing rationale for the proposed research, a proposal describes detailed methodology for conducting the research consistent with requirements of the professional or academic field and a statement on anticipated outcomes and/or benefits derived from the study.
