Harriet Jacobs didn't have an ideal life she was born a slave and experienced many tragedies in her life. She never gave her self pity. She worked for everything in her life no matter what. Never once did she give up she always had hope in herself and faith in life that it would all plan out right. Jacobs was born on February 11 1813 in Edenton, Carolina. She had one brother John Jacobs. Her father was a skilled carpenter and his earnings allowed them all to live in a comfortable house even though they were all born into slavery. When Harriet was 6 her mother died and she was given to her mothers owner Margaret Horriblow. Harriet was welcomed in the family. She was taught to read, write, and sew. In 1852 when Harriet was 12 Margaret died Harriet was given to Margaret's niece. Her niece was only 3 years old so Harriet was given to the father Dr. James Norcom. He tried to pursue her when she was 12 years old. So she had a plan to get pregnant by her white friend that was a lawyer in hope that james would sell her so he wouldn't have to deal with the baby. Well that was not the case he kept Harriet and her child, she didn't like that so she got pregnant again by the same man. He still wouldn't stop trying even though she had 2 children. When her oldest child turned 6 years old she found out that james was going to put them both in to slavery. Harriet finally had enough in june 1853 in the middle of the night she finally had gotten away from james. The father of her children brought their kids. While shes children were living in a nice comfortable house while Harriet lived in a crawl space for 7 years.
Harriet jacobs has a very important role in U.S history. She made a difference in women's history and in african american history.
