Summary of Oliver Twist


The housekeeper takes him in and nurses him back to health. The family of Mrs. Maylie and her niece Rose, grew very fond of Oliver. He became part of the family to them. Fagin hears of this failure by Sikes and goes out on his own with another man named Monk to retrieve Oliver once again. .
             As Oliver enjoys his company, a gold locket is revealed to belong to him from his mother. Monk takes and destroys the locket causing Nancy to get upset and want to help Oliver. She meets with Mrs. Maylie in London in order to warn her of the coming of Monk for Oliver. Nancy is overheard by one of Fagin's gang members and is brutally murdered by Sikes, who later flees London. He is later found hung after trying to escape an angry mob out to get him. Meanwhile, Monks is confronted by Mrs. Maylie who presses the truth about Oliver out of him. According to him, Oliver is his half-brother and their father married a wealthy woman who made him very unhappy. He then had an affair with Oliver's mother, Agnes Flemming. Their father then wrote his will stating that both Oliver and Monks would receive share of the wealth. Monks' mother destroyed the will in order to give Monks all of the money left behind. Monks is then forced to sign over the money stated to Oliver. Oliver finds out that Rose is his mother's sister. Oliver is awestruck by all of this and decides to go to Mr. Brownlow for comfort. Mr. Brownlow later adopted Oliver and Fagin met his long awaited dues to the gallows which he feared most of all. Oliver lived blissfully with his newfound family. .

             Throughout Dickens' novel, Oliver is portrayed as a continuous victim to the villainous people around him. The only glimpse of hope for him is in the arms of Mr. Brownlow. But within a short period of time that too is ripped out from underneath him. Oliver's character is made to gain pity from the reader. After all of the obstacles he faces coming out the underdog, he finally segues the perfect future for himself.
