Hybrid Cars and the Environment

Pollution, global warming, and preservation of the environment are controversial topics today. Air pollution is the most common environmental issue that is caused by contaminates that change the natural characteristics of the atmosphere and it can cause respiratory diseases. Particulate matter, carbon monoxide, ozone, nitrogen dioxide and sulfur dioxide concern the public the most (WHO). The leading cause of air pollution is cars running on gasoline. Hybrid cars can be the solution to dramatically reducing air pollution, however many people aren't aware how hybrid cars are an advantage to the environment and how they can benefit the owners. .
Air pollution due to cars affects the air we breathe, the ozone layer, water, and soil. Driving a gas run car involves combustion of fossil fuels where gases are emitted that affect the environment. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, more than half of air pollution in the USA is caused by mobile sources, mainly automobiles (EPA). When a car's engine is on, gases are emitted into the air such as carbon dioxide which is a greenhouse gas, hydrocarbons, nitrogen dioxide, carbon monoxide, and particulate matter which are tiny particles of solids including metal. Nitrogen dioxide and sulfur dioxide cause to acid rain which changes the pH level of water and soil and harms organisms that live off of those resources. These gases also affect the ozone layer whose purpose is to protect us from UV rays that come from the sun. Our carelessness caused the ozone layer to reduce in size which is very dangerous to our environment (EPA). Not only that, but these vehicles include fluids such as motor oil, antifreeze, gasoline, air-conditioning refrigerants, and brake, transmission, hydraulic and windshield-wiper fluids. These fluids are extremely toxic if they are leaked or inappropriately disposed. While the engine is running, these fluids are exposed to heat and oxygen and they combine with heavy metals from the engine making them more dangerous to the environment.
