Dropping of the Atom Bomb

The dropping of the atom bomb is one of the most controversial and unique events that has ever occurred in US history, and world history for that matter. The Second World War was slowly winding down with the defeat of Nazi Germany, but stubborn and die hard Japan remained a threat in the Far East. The Allies were very weary of the fighting, especially the United States, whom was the largest participant in the Pacific theater. Although the dropping of the bomb can be justified or refuted, depending in what one believes, there were indeed major political and military reasons as to why the bomb was ultimately dropped. .
With the expansion of Japanese power in the Pacific being contained and pushed back, Washington was finally able to begin planning an invasion of main islands of Japan. There was however a very big problem an invasion. According to the American Pageant, An invasion that presumably would cost hundreds of thousands of American (and even more Japanese) casualties (p.819). What this meant was that an invasion would ultimately end up with a large amount of casualties on both sides. This was made worse by the fact that the Japanese were willing to fight to the bitter death, therefore making them a much more formidable opponent to defeat. Therefore, the atomic bomb would be saving numerous American lives from a rather tough invasion. .
The dropping of the atomic bomb can also be looked as the US flexing its military capabilities, not necessarily Japan, but actually the Soviets. According to an entry on History.com, Truman and many of his advisers hoped that the U.S. atomic monopoly might offer diplomatic leverage with the Soviets. This was an idea that existed after the Potsdam conference. In fact, the bombings of Hiroshima occurred four days after the conference, meaning the US did not hesitate whatsoever. The US was trying to reduce the boldness of the Soviets, and this new weapon would be the ultimate deterrent.
