The Second Vatican Council

" Prior to the Second Vatican Council, this was not being fulfilled. Many argued that before the Council had taken place the mass was very mechanical and impersonal. The Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy passed which concluded a greater involvement of the congregation, the use of vernacular as opposed to Latin as well as a lowering of the age for Holy Communion. Having a greater involvement of the people can be argued as making the Church more like a democracy. Its sole focus was no longer a power figure at the front of the Church seeking no involvement from the congregation, but was now changed to "the full participation by all the people"2 .
In relation to the Catholic Church, collegiality is the cooperative nature of the bishops in the Roman Catholic government to make decisions alongside the Pope. Comparisons can be drawn between the Second Vatican Council and the modern day democratic governments such as that of the United Kingdom as well as Canada's very own parliament. The bishops could be compared to the Ministers of Parliament voting on issues and laws. Voting is a key concept when it comes to democracies. In deciding how the Catholic Church ought to be run, the college of these bishops are called on to make decisions. They are considered the heirs to the original twelve apostles that Jesus "established as a college or permanent assembly," to govern the Church. They discuss issues of great importance pertaining to the people of the Catholic Church (which can be compared to the people of a country) and hold assemblies "in order to reach agreement on questions of major importance." In a democracy, a Minister has the responsibility of looking after the people of their constituency just how the bishops have "the mission of teaching all peoples, and of preaching the Gospel to every creature, so that all may attain salvation through faith, Baptism and the observance of the commandments.
