In the story "Sonny's Blues" by James Baldwin, the narrator describes the caring relation of the older brother towards the younger brother. After their mother's death the older brother takes the responsibilities of raising Sonny. He worries a lot about Sonny's future. On other hand, Sonny doesn't even care about his older brother's feelings. The older brother is a dependable caring person who wants the best for Sonny; but he also has to learn that Sonny needs to have independence and make his own choices in life. .
In this story, we see the different characteristics of two brothers. The older brother has good life with his wife and daughter. He also takes on the responsibilities of his younger brother after his mother's death. He worries lot about his younger brother's life and about his career. We can see this when both brother are standing in the kitchen after their mother's funeral. The older brother asks Sonny many questions about his ambitions and goals in life. However, Sonny .
doesn't even care what his brother is saying. Those questions are funny to him. Nevertheless, older brother is still trying to explain to Sonny. He said, " Well, you think it's funny now, baby, but it's not going to be so funny when you have to make your living at it, let me tell you that" (p.120). By this situation, we can see the caring behavior of the older brother. .
However, the older brother should give respect to what his younger brother wants to be in his life. He also should encourage Sonny for that profession. He should learn that being a musician can also provide a good future. He think, that," being a musician might be all right for other people, but not for my brother Sonny" because he thinks that musician can't make a living from it. Therefore, If he encourage his brother to be a musician and supports him, then Sonny might got away from drug addiction and concentrate more on his studies and be a great musician, .
