Providing a refreshing commentary on many issues present in society today, "A Room With a View"' by E. M. Forster has become an important book, encapsulating the ideas and the value systems which made up society in the 20th century. In his book, E. M. Forster looks at everyday Edwardian life, and follows the protagonist, Lucy, in her struggles with the class system, love and her obligations as a woman living in that time. The book explores topics such as femininity, what it means to be a woman, class systems and their impact on relationships, family and friendships, identity and true love, all of which are very important relevant to people in today's society. .
In E. M. Forster's book, female characters who are integral to the plot are sparse, all of them fully formed characters who are unique and different in their own ways. In the society that is portrayed in ˜A Room With a View', there are very strong expectations which dictate how a women should act, how a women should look and who a woman should be. However, in his book, female characters rarely adhere to the regulations and what was expected of them during that time. The plot that E. M Forster writes depicts women in a frank and honest sense; they are complex, well-formed characters, and a strong focus in the book is Lucy forming her own identity and deciding on which type of woman it is that she wants to be. He depicts women who don't conform to certain aspects of Edwardian society, and women who are confident in themselves and their choices, and those who enjoy following the strict policies which are dictated by society and provides an unbiased and accurate view of what it means to be a women. This is still relevant in today's society, despite the progress which has been made on dismantling sexist and constricting expectations for women, they are still present to a lesser degree. It is an important issue which is looked at in depth in the book, and relevant to people today.
