Antigone - Sophocles

            Sophocles has written many famous plays. Sophocles shows in Antigone that an individual's pride and arrogance could have deadly consequences in his life. This essay will discuss one of his plays called Antigone. This paper will discuss Creon. Then the paper will talk about his flaws. Finally, the essay will show the consequences of his flaws.
             Creon and Antigone characteristics including pride are alike in many ways. The only difference is Antigone choose to serve the gods while Creon makes the state his top priority (Weigel 297). The gods will crush him. Creon is a strong-minded, self-willed tyrant who only cares for himself (Magill 44). Creon is irreproachable, unreasonable, and he gets too angry (Wilson 1). That is part of his problem. Creon is a sexist ruler. He says, "While I am alive, no woman shall rule over me"(Wilson 1-2). Also he is hard, unyielding and lacks.

             The next part of the essay will talk about Creon pride and arrogance. King Creon has now forbidden anyone to touch the dead body or give it a proper burial (Sophocles 312-8). He should not have done that. Denying someone the ability to do something makes him or her rebel. That was his first mistake. Creon believes if he tells his people to do or not to do something then he expects them to do it no matter what other god they believe in, (Magill 45) and since he feels he is always right he will not bend to other people ideas (Magill 46). Antigone defiance to Creon's wishes causes her to be arrested by Creon's guards and brought before him (Wilson 2).
             Creon is surprised when the Sentry brings Antigone in for burying her brother because he believes that all women should know their place and stay in it (Wilson 1). The fact that Creon will not pardon Antigone for breaking his laws shows that he believes he is above the other gods (Magill 45-46). He is wrong. He should not do that to family. Since Antigone defied him and then did not attempt to be afraid or apologize he gets upset and decides to have her killed (Magill 44-46).
