The Historical Rise of Organized Sports

For example; the gymnasts would focus on overall health and strength, however they were not as devoted athletes such as say a lucta (wrestler) or a pugilatus (boxer) (Achlin, 2014). .
American sports began as early as the 1500's, this sport being tennis which is still very popular today. In the 1800's soccer (which would come to be known as football) began. Boxing, which originated in ancient Greece was recognized in North America in 1867 and a Boxing Association formed in 1921. Baseball, football, boxing, tennis and wrestling are all types of sports in which the Romans had a form of what Americans have today (Smith, 2014). In today's modern world of sports, some of the top athletes are paid on average $20 million dollars or more. This does not include endorsements from commercials or public appearances. Because of the fans, the athletes can make this much, because the fans are inevitably the people paying the athletes salary; buying game tickets, merchandise and even parking passes to games. Just as in the times of the Romans, fans see these athletes as role models; but Americans use their hard earned money to see them play or fight. American sports admittance tickets are somewhat similar to the Roman times; sometimes admittance was free or the rich sat closer to the action and the poor further away. With the variety of sports today, there is an interest for almost everyone. In Roman times, it was considered sacrilege to not attend a sporting event (Ward, A., & Heichelheim, F, 2010).
For American sports the prize for winning depends on the type of game. For example, within boxing there is a championship belt, baseball is a pennant, NFL football is a super bowl (trophy) and tennis and NASCAR is a cup. As mentioned above, American athletes in the 21st century are paid highly for their participation; as opposed to the Romans whose debts were paid. A lot has changed from the days of Roman athletes; today a lot of American's and sportscasters will argue the American athlete is paid too much and that there needs to be a cap on salaries.
