Johns University I have really enjoyed the environment. I ultimately chose to attend this school because of its Vincentian beliefs. There are a plethora of opportunities to help people in many different ways. One of my missions in life is to help people in need; I would like to incorporate that in everything I do. I signed up to participate in volunteering at the Ronald McDonald house in Long Island. The Ronald McDonald Corporation houses families with sick kids. It is known as the "home away from home." The first Ronald McDonald house was built in Philadelphia. Fred Hill, a prominent football player for the Philadelphia Eagles, daughter was diagnosed with leukemia. Hill noticed the extreme amount of money he spent for uncomfortable housing and decided to do something about it. Fast forwarding forty years, The Ronald McDonald houses are ran completely on donations and are flourishing beyond belief with over 250 houses.
While at the Ronald McDonald house, myself and eight other individuals made dinner for the residents staying there. Before we began, we toured to beautiful place. The McDonald house is fully furnished with every amenity, especially those for certain disabilities, that one could offer. The founders of the foundation wanted to make sure that the residents staying received high-class utility devices, extremely nice pans, and so many opportunities. We prepared a simple taco meal with a few sides; the families staying were extremely grateful for the simple meal we had made them. It gave me a sense of humility seeing parents with children who were deathly ill still being able to smile and be happy.
After being there for a few hours, I began talking to this muscular man named David. He had been serving in the Iraq War and had to come home a few years ago because his daughter was diagnosed with cancer. While comprehending this middle aged mans story, I realized he was a veteran.
