Central Auditory Processing Disorder

.
People without CAPD have moderately difficult time learning new information or acquiring new skills. This task becomes extremely more challenging for a child that is coping with CAPD. Now, although the disorder doesn't completely handicap a person's ability to learn or communicate it does however make it nearly impossible for someone with this disability to learn in a classroom environment. No matter how hard teachers aim to have a controlled and quiet classroom, students most often engage in side conversations or make comments periodically. To a child who does not suffer from any learning disorders these noises can be irritating, but can be easily blocked out and ignored. However to kids with CAPD any subtle noise will get mixed into whatever they are trying to pay attention to. Their brain cannot differentiate between what their main focus is and whatever any other small noises around them. Thinking about the disorder in this way can make it easier for the common person to comprehend. Only thinking about how much of what we hear would we completely understand if there was constantly sound around that is just as loud as what we are trying to listen to. .
There is much that is known about CAPD, but for every bit of information that we have there is also a question to be answered. Perhaps one of the biggest and most important questions is, what causes this learning disability. "The causes of APD are unknown. But evidence suggests links to head trauma, lead poisoning, and chronic ear infections. Because there are many different possibilities - even combinations of causes - each child must be assessed individually" (Morlet, 20110). But these are only factors that are thought to influence in the development of this disorder. It is not a sure way to know who are the kids that will ultimately be affected. Just like there is not a sure known way to tell what causes CAPD there is also not a single symptom if your child is being affected by this disorder, but, there are a group of tendencies or behaviors that your child or student will display as a result of this deficiency.
