The nationalists demanded a policy for countrywide industrialization in order to produce more goods in the hope that it would lessen the economy's reliance on exports. Due to foreign conflicts with the United Sates and other national problems, in 1943 the armed forces overthrew the government and seized power. When the military over through the government Perón was apart of the new regime. Perón had the position as minister of labor, then later found his way up to vice-president of the military government. Perón started by creating a sector for Argentina, which helped to support nationalism and support the common man.
The strategy that Perón used to gain power took little under two years to gain control. Perón began by appealing to the lower major classes (since they were the majority), which consisted of the labor workers, which were against the Estancieros (corrupt farmers), and especially the foreign business which were trying to control Argentina's economy. Due to Perón's position as labor minister he was able to institute a strong nationalist campaign and present to the workers increased welfare standards. Also as vice president of the military government Perón was able distribute increased benefits to all junior officers. Juan Perón's wife Eva Perón was a large asset to his success. Eva was able to gather large crowds of workers and families with a lot of enthusiasm to Perón in order to display his common views and give support to the people. In 1946 Argentina held their first presidential elections after the military take over. The election was known as being the cleanest election of all time without its usual corruption. Perón won with 54 % of the votes. .
There was much opposition to Perón's presidency. The opposition came from virtually all the sectors of the economy. However the most opposition came from the higher ranked army officials. They did not support his actions for democratization of the armed forces or nominating his wife Eva Perón as vice president.
