Word Choice in A Clockwork Orange

We've come into contact before, I'm sure we have" (182). Alex was identified because his manner of word choice, separated him from others. It was recognized as something unique to him, even 2 years after the rape.
             F. Alexander's dialogue is devoid of such conventional nadsat language. Adults in the novel are more formal in language, and this reveals their maturity. Even one of Alex's own friends, "grows up," at the end of the novel, and drops the use of the slang. " '[Alex] talks funny doesn't he?' said this devotchka, giggling. 'This,' said Pete to the devotchka, 'is an old friend. His name is Alex. May I introduce my wife'" (208). Pete, once a naive droog, or friend, of Alex's, is now doing adult things like settling down, and more importantly using formal language. This change in Pete's behavior and maturity, fall parallel to his change in language. Essentially, Alex is only one representative of this identity. This story could be told from the perspective of another juvenile, and still produce the same outcome. Burgess cleverly uses language to give identity and character to the naive, troublesome youth, and thus isolates them from all others in the novel. .
Have you ever talked to a foreigner, and are completely baffled as to what some of the words mean, yet still have a basic understanding of the entire sentence? Similarly, Anthony Burgess's invented nadsat language uses words that are just as foreign, and creates the same affect. The reader struggles to understand Alex and his crew's conversations in the beginning of the novel. However, they are not impossible to decipher. Using context clues and connotations, the reader must dissect the sentence, and figure out what these teens are talking about. Nonetheless, it is a struggle and a work in progress that takes some time to catch on. Our struggle with reading the text goes hand in hand with Alex's struggle to make the right choice, and struggle to find someone he can turn to.
