Chicken Run- Ginger

From the film Chicken Run I have chosen to study the character Ginger. Through her character along with the use of narrative elements and filmic codes, the viewers are positioned to accept Ginger's values of loyalty, helping others and freedom for all. This helps the viewer to understand her beliefs that it is important to have determination and never give up.
Chicken Run focuses on Ginger and throughout the film, she is portrayed as a stereotypical heroine. This is shown in her first main scene when the chickens plan to escape from the Chicken Farm by going under the wire fence that surrounds them and escape. Ginger is positioned in the shadow but with a light facing on her. This makes her seem small, meek and defenceless in what is regimented to appear similar to a prison of war camp. The prison of war camp feeling is created with the fast, exciting and triumphant music that is taken from the movie The Great Escape a movie about war and the many references such as the chickens digging a hole with cutlery. The chickens are very close to escaping when at the last minute Mr Tweedy along with his dog manage to find Ginger and her fellow chickens. Heroically, Ginger runs madly clucking as she goes in order to attract the attention of Mr Tweedy and let him catch her, leaving the other chickens to be free. Ginger is shown with high camera angles looking down on her that portray her as insignificant, this is accentuated even more when Ginger runs into a dwarf garden gnome, that is at eye-level with her. Meanwhile Mr Tweedy has low camera angles looking up at him which make him look gigantic and powerful compared to Ginger. Gingers brave acts are then admired by the viewers who are positioned to sympathise and support her in goals to achieve freedom.
Another scene reveals Gingers selfless and optimistic look at life and freedom. Ginger blackmails Rocky into staying at the farm and teaching the chickens to fly to freedom.
