Propaganda During the American Revolution


            The American Revolution was a war that was fought between a great power and an emerging country. America was greatly outnumbered in men, and it would be easy to infer that the colonists lost their hope immediately. However, propaganda played a huge roll in keeping the colonists rooting for their country. Propaganda came in many forms such as pamphlets, articles in newspapers, and posters. Clever and witty writers such as John Adams and Thomas Paine relayed information, and support through their writings; conveying to not to give up. .
             The definition of propaganda is biased information, that is spread publicly, to publicize a particular cause. When one thinks of propaganda, one may think of the infamous posters created by Joseph Goebbels during the Holocaust. However, the propaganda used by the colonists during the American Revolution, was to support one cause the cause of freedom. In his speech, "Liberty or Death," Patrick Henry declares, "Is life so dear, or peace so sweet, as to be purchased at the price of chains and slavery? Forbid it, Almighty God!-I know not what course others may take; but as for me, give me liberty, or give me death!" Strong statements conveyed his view, and struck chords in the hearts of many colonists. It can be seen why such words were used, because of the british Stamp Act, Tea Act, Townshend Act, and the many more that were made to keep the mother country alive. However, with these acts came the fact that Britain taking away the freedom of the Americans. .
             An example of propaganda that was definitely biased, came in the form of a pamphlet called, "The Crisis." Among this was an article, "Common Sense," which was read by colonists and loyalists both. This influenced many of the people to fight for the American cause, by illustrating the hardships of the colonists. He says, "Tyranny, like hell, is not easily conquered; yet we glorious the triumph.
