Sacrificing Privacy for Security

Eric Sofge explains the idea of facial recognition in his article, "The End of Anonymity." Sofge discusses all of the different benefits of facial recognition and some of its analytical problems. He also discusses the purpose of facial recognition and how and when it will be appropriate to use. Back in 2000, it was very common for one to break into a house, rob a convenient store, or even steal a credit card without getting caught. But now in 2015, the government was able to come up with facial recognition and CCTV. Now when one wants break into a house, rob a convenient store, or steal a credit card he or she will no longer be able to get away with it. There is protection, that is, only where it is appropriate. Now when there is any suspicious activity in a neighborhood, a store, or at an ATM machine, there are motion censored cameras that snap a picture of the suspicious activity and save it into a private file that only the government and police officers have access to. Once the censor is triggered, the camera will turn on and videotape every movement from every angle. Once the picture or video is submitted into the private file, the facial recognition program installed will analyze all the footage received and try and match the suspect as close as possible, giving the police an idea of where to start investigating. These cameras are available in public places and neighborhoods. These cameras are programed to only record when there is suspicious activity going on so one's privacy will not be lost. With that being said, sacrificing a little bit of privacy to gain extra protection is absolutely acceptable. Losing our personal and collective privacy is certainly acceptable because it helps keep record of wrongdoing, it will help reduce crimes, and it will make investigations a lot easier, creating a better, safer world. .
First of all, it is completely acceptable that the government has access to personal information because it will help keep track of everyone.
