Aside from this, we also learn that he has personal problems. Alice, his girlfriend, is pregnant with Patrick's baby, but he does not love Alice and she is oblivious to this. In fact, not only does he not love her, he intends to kill her with an overdose of insulin. In this sense, Patrick is delivered by Spark as manipulative, as he repeatedly wins over Alice's trust even after the many times she has been warned about him. However, his fellow bachelor and friend, Matthew, immediately knows that he has no moral sense. He knows that he does not actually love Alice but Alice refuses to see any bad in Patrick, which shows how manipulative he is. .
Spark also adds a twist to the novel by including spiritualism which affects the characters and the way they act. Spark makes Patrick a spiritualist because it is intended to be the reason why Patrick is the way he is; manipulative and evil. Matthew relates spiritualism to Patrick, implying how a spiritualist cannot be capable of both love and morality. Perhaps it shows that Spark is against spiritualism because of all the negative implications towards it. Here, Spark relates to the idea of paranoia and madness because it shows how Patrick's character is a bit deranged. His character is deranged because everything he does is simply for himself and no one else and he will go to the extent of even having to kill somebody. It shows the madness of Patrick because not only do the readers know that he does not not want to marry his girlfriend, and is using her for sex, but that he is also a spiritualist is one of the reasons why he does not want to. Spiritualism makes Patrick insane because he gets so wrapped up between what is reality and what isn't. Matthew's accusation against Patrick is valid because Spark reveals how he became "fierily convinced of it." Matthew is convinced that Matthew truly has no intention in marrying Alice. Patrick is definitely the most evil of the characters in The Bachelors.
