Theater Review - Thirteen Clowns

All thirteen of the clowns were part of a broad and significant family-type image portrayed in this play. Their relationship with each other set the mood for the audience throughout this play, as they were all different characters with extremely different personalities. For example, there was a clown who was shy, he kept appearing and disappearing at the beginning of the play however as time went by he became more confident in himself during the course of the play. In contrast to that clown, there were a few clowns with a somewhat 'bursting' energy. They were at time loud, used the space of the stage confidently and their body language was very noticeable. Other clowns were more the funny types, as their purpose was to make the audience laugh as well as the other clowns. The lead clown was very prompt and organised; she knew what the other clowns had to do, for example when the clowns had to set up camp, she pointed each clown to the right direction by ordering them to complete a specific task such as getting sticks for the fire, setting up a tent and so on. Having a lead clown was a good thing because without one, none of the clowns would know what to do and they would never get anywhere in the play.
These clowns had a task to fulfil within this play, it was to look for the best they could find, to fix time because one of the clowns broke time at the beginning of the play, to navigate life's big issues piece by piece and to find the missing piece of them as a whole – the thirteenth clown. These tasks were what made this play so interesting; they created a rollercoaster feel to the audiences' emotions as well as maintaining a sense of humour with every task they undertake. Whether they or not they completed the tasks is another issue, they managed to complete all the tasks however they had to go through a lot to do so. To find the thirteenth clown they searched high and low, went through mazes and doors and finally found the last clown.
