Cherokee Indians Exhibit - Funk Heritage Museum

The exhibit first should have told the readers that the Paleo Period was the first period that took place. The reason the Native Americans discovered North America was because of the discovery of a land bridge that formed, connecting Siberia to Alaska. This spectacle is called the Beringia. The land bridge was visible and walkable, and the Native Americans chased buffalo and wild life to North America because of the necessity of food. Not only did the Native Americans hunt and kill their food, they also started to farm and plant crops. Researchers say the Native Americans started farming and planting crops between 7,000 to 3,000 years ago. Even though crop growing took place in the Paleo time period, the Native Americans were mostly known as nomadic hunters. Having all of this information around the Paleo time period exhibit could have let the audience have a better understanding of what took place during that time period.
The next period, following the Paleo Period, was the Archaic Period. The Archaic Period was around 10,000 to 3,000 BP. During the Archaic time period, hunting and killing wildlife was still the main source of food, but farming started to become a factor in the later years of this time period. The Archaic people also loved to fish and scour for shellfish. Now that I have done some research on the time periods, the painting for the Archaic Period exhibit makes sense. The Native Americans were lined up on the side of the bank of a river, and looked to be using different techniques of catching fish. If there was a little description saying what the Native Americans were doing, there would be less confusion on what took place during that time period. The exhibit of the Archaic Period also failed to show the essential farming and plant gathering techniques that were so valuable during this time period. The painting of the exhibit needs to cover all the details and information that researchers found, that took place in the Archaic Period.
